Autumn has arrived, and like every year it brings that gentle yet profound change you can feel in the air. I have never been a real summer person, yet every time autumn comes it leaves behind a subtle feeling of melancholy. Maybe it is because of the changing light, the shorter days, or the darkness that arrives too early. There is always that suspended, nostalgic atmosphere that quietly seeps in.
To be honest, I think this feeling has been with me since childhood. For me, September meant going back to school, and together with new notebooks came that slight sadness that always accompanied the season. But now, as an adult, I can see how truly beautiful autumn is.
Autumn is comforting, warm, and filled with little details that speak of home. After the heat of summer come long sleeves, light jackets, and soft coats, and there is a quiet joy in rediscovering all of it. This year, surprisingly, I suffered less from the heat than usual, and I enjoyed the change of season more. It felt like the temperature had finally found a perfect balance.
But more than anything, I love drawing autumn. Its colors are wonderful: orange, brown, and beige leaves, pumpkins, and that warm golden light that makes sunsets look more intense and alive. During this season, I enjoy illustrating cozy spaces filled with soft lights, steaming cups, and quiet atmospheres. I love the idea of slowing down, of finding the time to watch a series, to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, to stop and observe the sunlight reflecting on a balcony, or simply to go out for groceries and stop by my favorite newsstand to buy my sudoku books or a magazine with a little gift inside.
It may sound obvious, but the series that best represents autumn to me is Gilmore Girls. Its colors, its streets covered with leaves, and the cozy cafés of Stars Hollow perfectly capture the season’s spirit.
If I had to choose my favorite season, I would say spring, for its light, its scents, and the sense of renewal it brings. But right after spring comes autumn, which remains for me the most poetic season, the one that most inspires my illustrations and always makes me breathe a little differently.
And you? What is your favorite season? Does it make you feel melancholic, or does it inspire you? I would love to read your thoughts in the comments, because every season tells something about us, and perhaps deep down each of us has a little autumn to keep safe inside.
